Epoxy boards verses “Gu’d” epoxy boards
Many riders ask, “Is this board epoxy?” This question is similar to asking, “Is this a steak?” or “is this an automobile?” The reality is that each question could be answered “Yes”, but you still wouldn’t have full knowledge, or complete information as to the quality or features of said item. First lets clear one thing up. Epoxy is a type of resin that is used in much of today’s surfboard construction. After WW II, polyester resin was the big break through in surfboard construction, and although formulas were developed and progressed over the years, it is still a resin of choice for many surfboard builders even today. In the 80’s, we with other Sailboard builders were presented the challenge of building large boards while having to meet and maintain lite weight requirements. The only core solution was EPS (Styrofoam). Because the polyester resins would melt this foam, we needed to use epoxy resin. As we, and others, transferred EPS and epoxy materials to SUP and surfboard construction, ‘Epoxy’ became a buzzword, most often making all epoxy boards equal to the layman. Here is the FACT about ‘Epoxy’ boards. They are NOT ALL CREATED EQUAL!
Lets use ‘Cardboard’ as a simple illustration to explain the difference between conventional glassing and ‘sandwich’ construction. Cardboard is generally made of 2 layers of thick paper with a corrugated paper ‘sandwiched’ in between. If you tried to build a box using only 1 layer of paper your box most likely would be quite flimsy and not able to carry much of a load. This is a parallel to conventional glassing. Now to make an exponentially stronger box that can carry a considerable load you would choose the 2- layer stock with a corrugated center. This is equal to sandwich. Now if you chose to build a box with a single layer of paper that would support the same load as the corrugated sandwich, your single layer would need to be substantially thicker and such a box would end up weighing considerably more than the engineered corrugated sandwich box.
This example is quite basic and is made to help stimulate a more inquiring mind when it comes to selecting an ‘Epoxy’ board. Also it needs to be noted that other variables which include, the quality of the epoxy resin and fabrics applied; the qualifications of the hands that apply the materials; the environment where the board is made. A conventionally glassed board can be a quality product if the appropriate glass schedule is applied to a pure quality foam, using the best quality resin by experienced quality conscious craftsmen. However, this product can never be the ultimate in strength to weight, as this ratio can only be achieved via sandwich construction.
There are so many variables in board building that I could write a book. There are boards built with veneers, bamboo being among the most popular right now. Carbon boards are also a buzz. But just like ‘Epoxy’ Carbon is simply a material that comes in different weights and grades so that choice and application are of upmost importance.
