Freediving

If your adventurous outdoor lifestyle involves the water in any way, why not think about what a stand up paddle board can add to your next adventure? What you can do on a stand up paddle board is limited only by your own imagination and here is how I adapted a stand up paddle board to my outdoor passion.

Freediving is the sport of diving in the ocean without the aid of cumbersome, noisy and bulky SCUBA gear. Using only the air one can hold in his lungs, the freediver slips silently underwater and explores the underwater world one breath at a time.

Every freediver likes to explore new areas and there are many ways to get out on the water. Swimming from the beach, using a lay down paddle board, kayak or traveling by power boat are all methods of getting out onto the water but nothing compares to the freedom of movement, peace and quite of a well suited stand up paddle (SUP) board.

For me it is not only the simplicity of the stand up board but also the visual vantage point offered from a standing position on my SUP that has opened a new view of the ocean environment. On a SUP, you are virtually walking on water and this elevated vantage point allows you to see so much more than if you were sitting low to the water on a kayak or other form of transport.

That school of bait fish, passing pod of dolphins or foraging sea otter are so much easier to see and hear from a SUP. You might not think that a SUP would make that much of a difference in what you can see or hear around you but it does and has added immensely to my enjoyment of a day on the water.

The stability and buoyancy of a SUP board is ideal for carrying me and my freediving

gear as well as exploring the local kelp beds for new dive locations.

Coming soon….what to look for in a stand up board used for coastal exploring and freediving.
